Which Murat Pasha?

In this article, Giray Ercenk investigates the identity of Murat Pasha whose name is bestowed on the Murat Pasha Mosque in Antalya, and he corrects an error which has prevailed since the days of Evliya Çelebi.

Evliya Çelebi states that the most famous mosque in Antalya is "Murat Pasha the Kuyucu Mosque", and according to the epitaph on its southern portal, it was built in H. 978 (AD. 1570).

However, in the pious foundations record of Murat Pasha's bequest dated 1574, it states that the mosque was built by "Murat Pasha the Overlord of Karaman" which means that he did not have any connection with Murat Pasha the Kuyucu, who was famed of his acts of cruelty.

This error, arising from Evliya Çelebi's confusion about the titles of the two Murat Pashas, when he visited Antalya about a hundred years after the Mosque was built, has been repeated in every related work, written from that date to the present.
